Portal crashing
(( cf. here. Starscream is still LOL'd. ))

Starscream dives through the yawning archway, not caring where it leads, except OUT of this nightmare! Skyfire hasn't caught him yet, and now, won't, if Starscream has managed to shake him.

A flash of darkness, and Starscream pulls up abruptly in his headlong flight, just short of plowing face-first into a metal wall. Fortunately that he had transformed before hitting that archway--his F-15 form would have been a half-mile through the far side of that wall--or rather, plastered across it in tiny bits--before he could have reacted. Riveted metal plates, scaly with oxidation--very Cybertronian, Starscream thinks as he looks at them from about six feet away.

He backs away and settles to the floor with a clang that startles him. It's silent here--or was until the Air Commander intruded. Where is he? Some sort of tunnel... underneath Cybertron. The gravity feels right, and there's that subtle buzz of energy in the air, all the electrical fields and myriad communications chatter going on in the background that's so familiar. Starscream is home.

The red and blue Seeker looks around; there's some dim lighting up ahead. A row of plinth lines each side of the tunnel. Starscream ignores them and heads toward the light.

The tunnel leads to an intersection of tunnels, a rotunda well lit by flickering energon crystals. Motionless figures of metal and ceramic loom over Starscream; suddenly, he knows where he is.

This is the Decepticon Crypt, the place of rest and propitiation for those dead so respected or feared that the living still walked carefully around even their memories. Starscream represses a shudder; he's the Air Commander of the Decepticons, second only to Megatron himself--and that not for much longer! What does he fear of the corroded, forgotten dead?

Still, he finds his steps drawn toward that one certain niche--the one with his own shrine so carefully prepared. Not that he'll need it for a few million years, but it still exerts a certain irresistible fascination.

Starscream turns down the short hall leading away from the rotunda. He passes Thundercracker's future shrine--though oddly, there's an offering bowl at that one--and Dirge's, with its delightfully antique statue, unrecognizable to anyone who hadn't known him about three upgrades ago. He frowns at feel of rubble crunching underfoot. Doesn't someone take care of these shrines?

His own shrine, with the elegant classical sculpture commissioned from Cybertron's finest court sculptor shortly before the Nemesis' ill-fated flight, should be just about... here.

Starscream freezes in shock. His image, his beautiful statue, is gone. Only two shattered legs remain, one upright, one knocked over. The rest of it is rubble and scrap, tumbled behind the plinth still bearing his name. His name is curiously unmarred, as if whoever destroyed Starscream's image wanted everyone to know just who had been broken here.

Even here, the nightmare won't let him go.

"WHY??"

Starscream's cry reverberates down the empty corridors and hallways of the Crypt, disturbing the turborats, sending them scurrying for cover. It also disturbs... something else.

"Commander?"

As if by magic, a black and silver tetrajet Seeker materializes, his approach totally unheard and unseen before he'd spoken.

Blackstar peers at Starscream with something akin to shock, head cocked to one side and confusion written in his widened crimson optics. Something is seriously... wrong here, and it's got nothing to do with Starscream's shattered sculpture.

The unmistakable burn of the Air Commander's living spark is as obvious as a solar flare to the ghost.

Starscream turns quickly, confronting the black and silver Seeker. His guns are already charging, and there's something wild in his ruby optics.

"Soldier, identify yourself! What are you doing down here sneaking up on me, and who is your superior?"

There was something not quite right about how the newcomer had just... appeared when Starscream's back was turned. He should have heard him coming--but this was a nightmare. Perhaps his senses were useless as well.

Blackstar doesn't look too concerned about the charging guns, doesn't give them the least glance, in fact.

"I'm... Blackstar," he replies slowly, with the careful, confused air of someone explaining something that should be obvious. "And... You are. Or, at least you were. Still are, I suppose, but..."

Blackstar shakes his head in confusion. Starscream is Starscream is Starscream, right? Except... this isn't even the other Starscream that had come to his aid at Auspex's temple. That much is very obviously clear to the ghost.

Other Starscream... Hmmm. On a hunch, he calls for his Commander across that other comm band.

// Starscream? //

After all, this wouldn't be the first time a mech has popped into this universe all unawares from another. The Nexus could sure screw up reality, even when it wasn't trying.

Alas, no one answers Blackstar's hail on that other comm band. His Air Commander is right in front of him--he's just a bit behind himself today. Five years behind.

"So now I've got amnesia about my own troops," Starscream says bitterly. "I suppose you'll tell me you didn't sneak up on me, that it's my own audials and optics that are failing! Maybe I should let Skyfire catch up to me and shoot me--it would end this damned nightmare!"

Blackstar isn't in the habit of trying to contact Starscream for utterly frivolous matters, and Starscream has never simply ignored a call before. Even when the Commander and he had been in different timelines, different universes, Starscream had heard and answered. Blackstar is surprised enough that his concentration slips and he flickers for an instant before returning to seeming solidity.

"Your audials and optics are fine, Commander," Blackstar replies after a moment of confused study. "You... think this is some sort of... dream?"

Starscream watches the dark tetrajet flicker even as he blandly assures Starscream that his audials and optics are fine. Of course. It's a nightmare. The other figments of his imagination don't see anything wrong as he's falling apart and disappearing into irrelevancy.

"The alternative is that I've gone insane, so I'll stick with 'nightmare' as an explanation," Starscream says sarcastically. "Of course, that makes you another figment of my sadistic imagination, which seems bent on punishing me for some reason."

It is, isn't it? It's that old self-doubt and insecurity run amuck, re-writing the universe and himself as, deep-down, he believes himself and the universe to be. One generic red, blue and silver Seeker with poor judgment and no real leadership skills who can't ever get anything right, and who really doesn't matter in the big picture, in spite of all his loud and violent attempts to deny that. Couldn't even save his own partner, not even when he dug him out of the ice. What good is Starscream?

He's always hated that part of himself. It sneaks up on him and ambushes him at the worst possible times. That makes him angry.

Red optics narrow. "Figment or not, you will answer my questions, Blackstar! What are you doing here?"

"Or you could have popped in from another reality," Blackstar counters reasonably. "There's more universes than this one, after all, Commander."

Blackstar cocks his head the other direction, eying Starscream speculatively, a little shadow of irritation and anger in his optics.

"I'm not a figment, you know," he explains with deceptive mildness. "Not that what I am will do much to convince you otherwise. But I'm not just some wild bit of bad energon in your system, no glitch in your processor."

No spirit appreciates being forgotten or relegated to the ranks of "overactive imagination" or "bad fuel". Not when they aren't actually trying to be irritatingly spectral and frightening. He crosses his arms over his chest, staring evenly at the living counterpart of his Commander.

"You live. Technically, that makes you no longer my Commander, so I really don't have to answer your questions. Out of deference to who you are and who you will one day be, though, I'll make an exception. Consider yourself lucky; I used to tell old Shocky to kiss my afterburner for a lot less, back before my... transfer," Blackstar replies with a certain amount of not-quite malicious amusement. He smirks, letting his form slip to transparency.

"This is the Crypt, Commander. There's those who'd say that I belong here. Me? I've got other plans."

Starscream glares balefully at the ghost. He's pissed off now, and up to a screaming match with Megatron, if it came to it.

"You actually make more sense than anything else I've run into! I suppose my guns don't work on you any better than they do anything else," he snaps, turning and firing both arm-guns at the pathetic remnants of his shrine.

To his considerable surprise, the top of the plinth explodes where the full-strength laser bolts hammer it, the last bit of statue melting and the ceramic base cracking and shattering under the heat.

"What the-- NOW my guns work!" Starscream stares at each smoking gun barrel in turn. "What does it mean?"

//He’s down there. Past the rotunda, and down one of the halls. Listen… you can hear him from here. It’s just a matter of triangulating onto that voice.//

Frostbite stared steadily down the corridor, contemplative, with a disturbed little frown pulling down her lips. // Blackstar’s not answering my calls. I don’t like that. I can think of a number of possible reasons and none really good. He could be in serious trouble.//

Again. Auspex had let slip what had happened to him the first time after all.

//… do you know where we are, on Cybertron?// The voice over the comm. was more hesitant, //If he escapes here… I may not be able to follow. He’ll lose me very quickly. I’m really only familiar with parts of Iacon here. And somehow I doubt we’re below Iacon.//

Skyfire considers that for a moment. // I know where we are. I visited here after I returned from space. After Unicron. // His voice is heavy.

// I don't know any part of Cybertron very well any more. Things have changed so much. And I can't follow him here the way I did in the Nexus. Air is too polluted. So we catch him here. Do you have a plan? My plans are a bit sketchy, to say the least. //

//We can’t let him escape here then,// She nodded in agreement, //We corral him, if possible. Two mechs each coming from either side. I don’t know the layout of this place aside from what little I’ve scouted, so I’m not sure what other surprises are in store… or what route two of us will need to take to get behind Starscream… if we can get behind him. Whatever anyone does… do not disturb the graves. I don’t like the air of this place already… I don’t want things to get in here any more hostile than they are.// Not much of plan, but she would work with what she had.

She checked her cache of ‘spaced nastiness. The knife she had shown Auspex was still there. Good.

//We play it by audio about how we exactly reveal our presence. Starscream is either going to fight off the bat or attempt flight. If there’s anything that’ll really send him over the edge, Skyfire, or might soothe him some, either by saying or doing, please tell us now. Or shock him so much he might freeze for a few precious seconds.// She frowned. Seeker claustrophobia was beginning to kick up. She wanted the sky and the stars. //It’s cramped in here. Not much room for him to manoeuvre – or us.// Especially little for Skyfire. //Rodimus and Sideswipe probably will be able to move better in her. Since he thinks he’s in a nightmare, we should work with that if we think it will have any effect… maybe we can convince him if that he co-operates with us, he’ll wake up.// Her tone suggested she didn’t have much hope for that. No, she fully expected to be met with a hail of fire.

//We could be met with more than laserfire and null rays. This is the house of the Decepticon dead. They keep it. And I don’t need to remind you that Starscream is skilled in more things than just the regular sciences and combat…// No, Starscream was a being that had lived eons, who knew what he knew? The Al-Kitab Al-Azif couldn’t have been the only thing he had studied.

Her own knowledge in comparison was small and purely academic. She did not practice what she read; the very possibility that she’d open doors to things that she’d have a hard or impossible time closing – both in this world and within herself.

Theory and practice were two entirely different things.

//I’m very worried about Blackstar,// she admitted.

What did she have? She had her wits, her intelligence, her knowledge. Weapons… she had never put away the things from the Tau Ceti III mission… forgetting about them as other things had come… she had her abilities with the cold and ice. And if she had to, the ice was going to come for him, just as it came for Skyfire.

She had the willingness to do what needed to be done.

Starscream had said that once upon a time, the Decepticons were the sword and shield of Cybertron. Its defenders against its enemies; both to the planet and its people. And that purpose… that honourable purpose… had been twisted and skewed until the Decepticons were defenders no longer, but destroyers… killers… murderers. Starscream was completely back to that now.

It was war and he was the enemy.

It doesn’t make it any better.

Now Frostbite was wearing Their brands, walking in Their hallowed grounds. She couldn’t honour what They’d become, but that original purpose… she felt somewhat bound to that. She wouldn’t let Starscream destroy the Truce.

By Primus, she would wake Starscream up.

Skyfire tries to move carefully forward, out of the others' way; unfortunately, stealth is not one of his strong points. The sound of his footsteps echo through the tunnels.

// I am concerned, too. I don't know the layout of this place, beyond the tunnels lead generally to the hub in the one direction, and Starscream's own shrine is a short distance off the hub down a tunnel--that might be the place to look for him. I don't know what's at the other end of the tunnels, whether they just end, or connect with lateral corridors, or what. //

// Rodimus, do you know the layout of this place? //

// My appearance will shock him, period. I can't say whether he'll attack me or flee me. *A sound almost like a sigh* I strongly suspect if I were obviously incapacitated or trapped, he'd approach me, though probably not with benign intent. //

A brief hesitation. // There is one thing... I wish I'd thought of this when we were making preparations. If you could cover my Autobrand or replace it with the Decepticon sigil.... //

//Got any more paint in white and purple? Sideswipe is very fast when it comes to painting and very thorough.// The innumerable pranks over the years were proof enough – skills honed so much, she could almost believe things had just… materialized out of the air. Before they can really get started, Skyfire gets a call from Blackstar. Blue optics widen in surprise.

// Frostbite, Blackstar is back in communication. Listen... // and he echoes Blackstar's transmission to his companions.

// Skyfire! He had me constrained for a bit while we talked; I couldn't warn you. He's convinced this is a dream, and I've been playing that. I've tried to convince him that he's been stuck in this dream, over and over until he gets it right, and killing you or anyone else isn't getting it right. We're flanking you now, though. He's not talking or listening unless he's got the tactical advantage. I... I'm not sure if I can take out his guns or not, now. Don't count on it. //

(( c.f. here.))

// Thank you! We were... concerned when we didn't hear from you. Frostbite in particular, // Skyfire replies.

Frostbite's here, too? He reaches out to include her - and Rodimus, who is also supposed to be here, and who he's thankfully met on the occassion of dropping off a pack of Zambonis - too. Unfortunately, Sideswipe gets left out of the loop, since Blackstar isn't aware of him yet.

// I'll worry about me. You worry about you, // he replies gruffly. It's a tone Skyfire, at least, is probably familiar with from Starscream.

// You have a cornered and angry Air Commander who thinks this is all fantasy heading your way. The down side to convincing him that he's trapped here until he gets it right, is he may decide that he's coming back anyway, and there's nothing to lose. You lot watch your afts. //

"A mirror. In the Nexus," Starscream repeats slowly. "All this--" he waves a hand at the scarred walls and still settling dust, "is because of some idiotic faerie prank?"

His voice rises, shrill and loud. "I TRIED TO KILL MY OWN FR--ALLIES BECAUSE OF THIS! I could have destroyed the Truce--the only thing keeping the Decepticons from oblivion! I said things..." Starscream looks at Skyfire again, and looks away quickly. "...I should not have said."

"You know the Nexus people better than I do. Is there any way of tracking down the idiot trickster who did this? I have a sudden urge to start sowing faerie mounds with powdered iron."

Well, at least his freakouts are reassuringly normal. Roddy tries to sit up again, stubborn patient that he is, and manages to prop himself up on his injured elbow. "Hey, take it easy. Everyone knows how powerful LOLs are, I doubt you would have broken the truce even if we hadn't gotten ahold of you. Anyway-" he smiles - "it's over now, and we won. Time for drinks!"

He doesn't think he has to add 'and be more careful next time you're in the Nexus.' Starscream, smart lad that he is, has probably learned his lesson. He hopes.

"Rodimus, thank you for warning us that you were moving suddenly. You almost got your spoiler welded to your helmet," Skyfire says drily. "Judging from the look on Frostbite's face, you are in genuine danger of getting welded to the floor until she's done patching you up. The ability to move around while wounded does not make it advisable to do so. My partner here persisted in trying to climb out of his repair berth to deal with Steadfast and Strata after we brought him back from the Yukon in much smaller pieces than when he left. The only thing stopping Ratchet from welding him to the berth was the fact that I could lean on Starscream and keep him from moving.."

Skyfire looks down at Rodimus. "I don't need to lean on you, do I?"

Rodimus stared up at Skyfire, then slooowly lay back down.

"I'll be good."

Starscream is pacing around; he stops abruptly to glare at Skyfire.

"Excuse me? Galvatron's designated Acting Air Commander was getting into a screaming catfight with a junior Autobot flyer over their ancestry, my murder of said AAC's lover, and my supposed sinister plans for said junior Autobot flyer, and I'm going to ignore this blatant breach of Decepticon discipline in front of half the Autobots, Neutrals and slagging humans in Autobot City? I don't care how many pieces I'm in, that was just... Not Done! Not by someone who's effectively a Sector Commander! Even I didn't do things like that!" Starscream looks very indignant.

“Mmm? Who me?” Frostbite smiled a shark’s smile – the kind that occurs when blood hits the water, and waggled a welder before digging back in to finish dealing with the shoulder wound (she had sealed off all bleeding lines in the blown off weapons mount and cleaned the wound as well) before she was ready to put armour back over the repaired area. “Naah…”

Frostbite just shook her head at that. Catfight? She hadn’t really heard of that one – wait – oh yeah, it was coming back. Oh Strata… She remembered her reaction to Optimus Prime earlier, and how she had jumped headlong into that argument .

Thankfully it had been resolved, judging by the behaviour Frostbite had seen at Snowcat and Demolisher’s party. Thank Primus for small mercies.

It had been resolved by a mangled, gutted, should-have-been-dead Starscream lifting his head off the repair berth long enough to verbally tear both Strata and Steadfast new exhaust ports, in one of his occasional exhibitions of "Why yes, I really was Air Commander for a reason". After he'd been repairedrebuilt, Starscream sorted out things with Steadfast.

Starscream doesn't feel very Air-Commanderly right now. He's rather embarrassed by the things he's slowly remembering--and Frostbite is mad at him. He's sure of that. Or was. He's not sure what she is right now. She's a distractingly lovely silver jet now, too... but those Decepticon marks just don't look right on her.

Nor does Skyfire's lack of Autobot emblem look right on him.

"Sky, something happened to your paint job. It needs retouching."

"In a minute," Skyfire says. "I'm almost done with Prime's spoiler."

Skyfire is as good as his word, trimming off the flash from the last seam right afterwards. "Rodimus, I don't have your colors handy, so you'll have to get the paint touched up back home."

He puts his repair tools away and stands up, fishing around in his cabin for his painting supplies again. On finding them, he hands them to Starscream, who promptly begins air-brushing Skyfire's Autobot emblem back on.

Starscream re-paints it without a mask, and without flaw.
